Delicious food at an incredibly affordable price! Everything is $1. I purchased two perfectly fried chicken thighs, collards, and my friend's meal for $9 ($14, including tip). What I love about these prices is that it means that eating out can be accessible to most, and it offers a fantastic opportunity to tip generously.
Paper towels are everywhere, and thank goodness! The fried chicken definitely calls for plenty of napkins. I love how a roll is conveniently placed on each table!
The food was delicious. I have stomach sensitivities that can dispose me to a secondary experience with the quality of food, as it were. I had no issues here!
Thus, I will be back soon and often! -

I really don't like giving bad reviews, especially towards black businesses, but here we go. I thought it was cool and unique to find a fast Soul food spot in Louisville. This spot is located in Old Louisville, which may be a historical neighborhood for African-Americans.
I saw that everything on the menu was a dollar and got hyped like this is a dope concept. Man, I was wrong. I should have been skeptical because the place did not look anything like the picture, in terms of appearance. The food looked it was sitting for some time and the fried food was under heat lamps.
I got the catfish, Mac and cheese, greens and potato salad. The best thing was the potato salad and that was average. The other food wasn't good at all. -

This is an interesting place. Service was fast and as others have mentioned it is very affordable. It isn't the best I've had, but for a few dollars I'm happy. I got the fish fry and the mac n cheese. The fried fish was a bit bland but the fish was crispy outside and tender inside. The mac n cheese was gooey and I was pleasantly surprised by how much flavor it had.
I tried the yams my friend ordered and they were fantastic. Definitely something I'd order next time. The fried chicken skin was good. Unfortunately, they don't do thicken breasts and I'm not personally a huge fan of dark meat.
My friends and I decided to eat in the restaurant (we had been walking St. James for a few hours and it was nice to sit in the AC), but in the future I'd do carry out. This isn't my new go to place, but it's good. If you are looking for something cheap and tasty I'd check it out! -

Southern Express is a quaint hole-in-the-wall off of Oak Street in Old Louisville. Don't be discouraged by the paper taped in the windows displaying "no loitering;" this place is good. Upon entry you order via cafeteria style. The offerings of fried chicken, fried fish, pork chops and livers all looked great. They do not serve breast here though, so if you're a white-meat fiend, keep that in mind. The sides ranged from Mac and cheese, collard greens, cabbage, beans and variety of soulful accompaniments. The highlight to me is the incredible value for what you get. Each item is literally only one dollar. So I ordered three pieces of chicken, macaroni and greens with a Big Red and my meal was six dollars. Less than a Chik-fila #1 combo. Do yourself a favor and eat here. Service is incredibly fast and the flavors were on point. I've had better, but not at these low prices.

Very very cheap ! I'm always a sucker for that. This small restaurant is very cute, as soon as I walked in ( the older lady which I'm assuming is the owner ) was very welcoming, kind of like those classic grandmas. I was interested in trying some "soul food" so I searched and I came across this place. Everything is a dollar !! I got the Mac n Cheese, Corn Bread, fried chicken, collard greens and kool aid... for the price you can't really complain. It was pr try good, the chicken was pretty simple but again it's $1! The one thing I really wasn't a fan about was the collard greens, i don't know if this is how it typically taste ( again I've never had it ) but it was pretty salty. Besides that, I liked it and I probably will be back again.
